Yemie Sonuga is an international performer. She is a Nigerian, Canadian, American, singer, actor, model, and writer in New York City. She has recently returned to the city after starring in Working the Musial at Meadowbrook Theatre, in Michigan. You can catch her on the brand new Podcast Episodic ‘Next Stop’ an audio sitcom about your mid-to-late 20’s when everyone is changing around you, and you worry that you might not catch up. Listen now on Spotify and Apple Pods where she stars as Ally Lonergan.
Canada is where Yemie first found her passion for performing. She welcomed opportunities to work with influential mentors such as Garth Drabinsky, and Adrian Noble. She began her training at Grant MacEwan University and was later accepted into The Royal Scottish Conservatoire where she obtained her Masters.
After completing her masters Yemie made the decision to move to London where she began to experience success. She was first cast as Mabel in the national tour of Fame the Musical. During this time she was auditioning and was cast in the original cast of Ghost the Musical. This would be Yemie’s first original cast and world premier. While part of Ghost the Musical Yemie worked with legendary industry names such as Tony Award winner Mathew Warchus, Academy Award winner Bruce Joel Rubin, and Illusionist Paul Kieve. Halfway through her contract in Ghost the Musical she was asked to understudy the leading role of Oda Mae Brown. Yemie is fortunate enough to count herself amongst the few women in the world who have played this role. Fun fact; you can listen to Yemie on the Original Broadway Cast Album for Ghost the Musical.
Yemie’s next big projects in London were the original West End cast of Matt Stone and Trey Parkers, The Book of Mormon, and the Olivier Award Nominated revival of Porgy and Bess, understudying and playing the role of Bess. Yemie also had the honour of preforming at the 2015 Olivier Awards.
Shortly after she was asked to join the World Premier Company of The Little Prince written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s son Nicholas Lloyd Webber and Jamie Reid. Yemie expresses a massive thank you to renowned orchestrator Simon Lee who sought her out for the role.
After closing the Little Prince, Yemie moved to New York City, and quickly booked the US National Tour of Disney’s The Lion. Since living in New York City, Yemie has filmed the award winning short film Hook’d. A world wide campaign for Peloton, and currently is a lead in Spotify’s podcast of the week Next Stop!
